Key Accountabilities

The R&D Manager is a guider and consultant of new food offerings for Aspire Bakeries.  In addition the Manager is a subject matter expert in his/her field of development and in the processes required for commercializing those products.  The Manager reports to the R&D/Commercialization Director level or above and may also have Sr. Food Technologists, Food Technologists and/or Food Technicians reporting to him/her.  There is no budgetary responsibility for the Manager other than to guide development within any given price range. The Manager is responsible for managing his/her expenses, and those of direct reports, in a timely and frugal manner.

Responsibilities

  • Assists direct reports in planning and executing timelines in concert with the needs of customers and in line with current internal and external capabilities
  • Responsible for helping ensure a seamless transition and sustainable quality of product from bench top to manufacturing to customer merchandising channels. 
  • Demonstrates a strong passion for food and innovation
  • Consults on and/or manages department projects including product development, process improvements, special projects and technical innovation improvements
  • Works in conjunction with Operations team and Director R&D/C to identify and/or develop new technologies.
  • Delegates work assignments, gives authority to work independently, provides recognition for results.
  • Develops rapport with key customers and dedicated to the team so the best understanding of needs and project requests are communicated clearly
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, gather and analyses information skillfully, develops alternative solutions.
  • Pursues training and development opportunities; strives to continuously build knowledge and skills; shares expertise with others
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of themselves and team. Able to work without significant direction.
  • Adherence to NPD/BRC guidelines/GMPs
  • Maintains high level of knowledge base regarding market trends and new ingredient opportunities through attending industry seminars, continuing education, trade shows, industry periodicals, and professional technical/culinary associations.
  • Conducts Product Ideation sessions in support of new platform growth, both blue-sky innovation and at customer request.
  • Demonstrates expertise in R&D equipment use and settings.
  • Demonstrates expertise in running line trials and working with plant personnel.
  • Communicates with project managers to accurately maintain data through commercialization process
  • Knowledge of Aspire Bakeries product offerings in those fields of development responsibility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • AA/BA/BS in Food Science or related field required; MS preferred.  Additional culinary education preferred
  • 3 to 5 years working as an industrial food developer required.  Additional culinary development experience preferred.
  • Expert grasp of English (verbal and written) required.  Fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of:
    • Skilled at Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
    • Knowledgeable of SAP and Genesis.
    • Understanding of OEC Graphics, Discovery, SharePoint, etc.
  • Domestic travel up to 50% of time.  Occasional international travel.
  • Sound basic math skills required (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, ease with fractions and decimals).
  • Ability to read and understand a basic formula.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to climb, stand or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Use a computer keyboard and monitor more than 25% of total work time.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
