The Technical Maintenance Manager is responsible for providing technical support and assistance to the bakery maintenance manager on all aspects of line operations including equipment, procedures, and personnel. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating and supervising day-to-day activities of maintenance workers to ensure the equipment, machinery, or instruments function reliably and safely, are maintained and in good working order. Provides technical support that minimize production costs and recommends ways to improve productivity, quality, and efficiency of operations.

This position is responsible for ongoing maintenance and upkeep of building structures, and ensures maintenance work is performed in compliance with policies, procedures, and safety practices. Coordination of maintenance staff activities with Van Nuys Managers is required



Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, the Technical Maintenance Manager is responsible for the following:

Oversee Maintenance Duties (40%)

  • Plans, prioritizes, delegates and supervises general maintenance duties necessary to maintain all bridge structures, paved surfaces, equipment, machinery and instruments
  • Establishes methods/work flow procedures to meet work schedules and coordinate work activities with other departments or stakeholders. Prepare recommendations on all related technical matters.
  • Identifies resource requirements and delegates tasks to achieve efficacy and to match skills levels
  • Monitors the use and inventories of spare parts, maintenance supplies, and equipment
  • Receiving and delegating work orders ensuring all work is complete.
  • Resolves issues and recommends measures to improve productivity and quality of work
  • Trains workers in job duties, safety procedures and corporate policies
  • Plans, coordinates and evaluates preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Prepares work progress reports
  • Performs any other duties as assigned
  • Inspects completed work to make sure repairs/ preventative maintenance have been completed correctly and that works conform to specifications and safety standards
  • Coaches and mentors staff and assists them to diagnose and repair more complex problems.
  • Ensures maintenance resources are managed within budget constraints.
  • Tasks are prioritized and assigned to promote effectiveness and efficiency.

Administrative Duties (25%)

  • Plans and facilitates maintenance schedules, activities and services
  • Completes necessary reports and records to ensure work orders, repairs and maintenance work adequately received, recorded, prioritized and completed in a timely manner
  • Prepares supporting documentation for annual capital and maintenance operations budgets; requisitions supplies, orders equipment and material; maintains control and reviews system
  • Attends and participates in departmental and project meetings
  • Attends and participates in workshops, conferences and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned
  • Monitors and recommends capital and maintenance budgets
  • Reviews utilities consumption and strives to minimize costs
  • Participates and provides best advice and recommendations to Manager in the development and implementation of goals and objectives
  • Maintains schedule for maintenance and repairs of all assigned areas
  • Maintains employee work schedules including assignments, job rotation, training, leave and overtime scheduling
  • Coaches and mentors staff and assists them to diagnose more complex problems with structures, machinery and equipment.
  • Responsible to work proactively and in conjunction with the support teams (Sanitation, Maintenance, R&D, Engineering, & Quality Assurance) to identify operational improvements.


Supervision Duties (20%)

  • Supervises maintenance staff on a day-to-day basis.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable health & safety standards and that all necessary PPE is available and in place
  • Conducts inspections of safety equipment
  • Identifies training/development needs. Ensure all employees are aware of their responsibilities specific to food safety, legality, and quality.
  • Manages and monitors absenteeism and addresses attendance and other performance related challenges on an ongoing basis
  • Plans, coordinates and supervises the work plan for assigned work, including work performed by independent consultants, contractors and sub-contractors
  • Meets with staff to identify and resolve issues; assigns work activities; monitors workflow, reviews end results and procedures; provides constructive feedback or acknowledges/validates good performance
  • Supervises, coaches and assesses staff work performance for continuous improvement. Responsible for leading and driving continuous improvement activities and/or focus groups as required.
  • Evaluates contractors’ performance and makes recommendations
  • Approves and manages overtime, as required
  • Applies progressive discipline as necessary, short of dismissal. Makes recommendations

Compliance Duties (15%)

  • Recommends maintenance policies and procedures for approval to ensure uniform, safe and industry-accepted standards for maintenance performance
  • Recommends and implements procedures to assure compliance with applicable safety regulations to Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Skills, Experience & Qualification:



  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of related bakery or food manufacturing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Year of Experience

  • (5) five years of related bakery or food maintenance experience

Technical Knowledge/Experience

  • Knowledge of civil and structural engineering normally acquired through postsecondary education and a minimum of three (3) years relevant experience in a management/supervisory role in a maintenance
  • Additional courses or certifications in job responsibility areas such as: electrical, mechanical, welding, millwright, maintenance management, asset management, health and safety, etc. are an asset
  • Knowledge of Asset Management, Occupational Health & Safety, property legislation and regulations
  • Experience in procurement, in tendering for major projects and budgeting and costing input for capital and maintenance projects
  • Experience in applying and interpreting engineering reports and drawings and contracts
  • Project management experience: Experience managing major projects to completion and working on major structures. Develops project plans; coordinates projects; manages project team activities.
  • Experience in developing work plans and reporting on achievements, handling and disposing of waste material
